Word Girl will be visiting us that day and we are so excited to have her come and spend time with us. All of our summer reading programs will take place on Thursdays at 2pm starting on June 5th and running until July 10th. All kids from 1-6th grades are invited to join us for some great science-themed fun this year. Registration is easy. Just come by the library and sign a registration form. Book logs will be made available at the circulation desk. It is very important that all books read during this time are recorded properly in order to be eligible for prizes.

Teens and adults won’t be left out of the summer reading fun either. Both teens and adults will have a reading contest for the months of June and July. All each teen and adult has to do is: 1) read books and 2) fill out a “How I Liked this Book” form found at the circulation desk. There will be a drawing at the end of June and at the end of July for our teen and adult winners. Summer Reading is here! Are you excited yet? We are!!

Look at the calendar. Go ahead. Have a look. What do you see? We see that school is almost out. How did that happen? We know that all the school kids and teachers are happy to be getting a short reprieve from all the hustle and bustle of learning. However, it is important that we keep learning something new every day. How can the library help with that? That’s easy – read! And don’t forget to tell us “What You Geek” about the library! We Geek summer fun and reading!

Spring has sprung here in West Tennessee. All the beautiful buds and flowers on the trees. New grass growing. All the pollen in the air . . . *achoo!* It is beautiful. What else is beautiful here in our community? The public library, that’s what!
We have a beautiful library here in our town. We are extremely proud of it and want everyone to come and see us too! Not only do we have a beautiful building, we have a wonderfully stocked inside. We have books, magazines, newspapers, as well as computers, printers, a copier, and fax. We have comfy chairs and great reading areas. We also have WiFi connection for your personal laptops. We also have, most importantly, a friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous staff. What does all this cost?
The Elma Ross Public Library is jointly funded by the city of Brownsville and Haywood County. Our budget consists of salaries for the staff, maintenance of the building and equipment, and of course funds for library materials. We would like to thank the city and county for their generous support over the years. And it is our continued hope that they, and you in the community, continue to support the library as well. Why?
The public library, as all public libraries do, need the support of the community so that we can survive and thrive in our communities. We can’t do that without YOU! We are here to offer you access to the information, whether it comes from a book or an on-line source, that you need. We here at the Elma Ross Public Library are primarily defined as a “popular materials” library. That means that we keep up with the popular authors of the time. We also have access to scholarly journals, books and other materials through the Tennessee Electronic Library. We also have access to electronic materials through the Regional Ebook and Audiobook Download System. We have something for everyone, from birth to senior citizen. We haven’t even mentioned programming. That will have to be another article. Come and visit us today, we are worth every penny.
An another note, a big, hearty, round of applause to Mr. Hoke Shirley, our guest speaker for the Friends Annual Membership Dinner Meeting held last Tuesday. Thank you, Mr. Shirley, for your wit and wisdom and for sharing with us. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Friends of the Library group this year. If you haven’t made your donation/membership to the Friends this year, please do so today. Your membership matters.
Happy Reading!
