The State Librarian and Archivist just made us local libraries aware of another great summer reading program called Tristar Reads. Tristar Reads is an annual contest designed to encourage children across the Volunteer State to read for at least 20 minutes a day during summer break. The program runs from May 1, 2017 (Yes, we are aware that the date has already passed. Like we stated earlier, we just got this information ourselves and are passing it along to you.) through September 1, 2017 and is open to all Tennessee students in kindergarten through 12th grade. To participate in Tristar Reads, students must register at http://www.tristarreads.com and log their reading hours. Three $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded to the students who read and log the most hours over the course of the summer. Tristar Reads will award a scholarship to one elementary school student (K-5th grade), one middle school student (6th – 8th grade). And one high school student (9th – 12th grade). Participating students must be between the ages of 5 and 18. Public, private and homeschool students are eligible to participate in Tristar Reads. All students must register to participate on the Tristar Reads website. Students under the age of 13 must have a parent or legal guardian’s permission to participate in the program and agree to terms and conditions of the program. Participants must keep track of the hours they spend reading and a list of the books they read. That information must be submitted to Tristar Reads to determine the scholarship winner. There are multiple ways students can log their books and reading hours. Students can log their hours through the Tristar Reads website (www.tristarreads.com) or submit printed and scanned log sheets by e-mail at info@tristarreads.com, or by mail o P. O. Box 198183, Nashville, TN 37219.

Happy Reading!

There are just a few days left for the Teen and Adult Reading Contests for the month of June. Teens and Adults have until June 30 at 5pm to get all their “How I Liked This Book” slips entered. The drawing for the June contest will take place on Monday, July 3. The Teen Reading and Adult Reading Contest for July will begin on July 1 and will run until the end of the month. Keep reading and entering.

We are having a lot of fun learning about how we can Build a Better World at our Thursday programs. Storyhour programs are offered each Thursday at 2pm for K-6 graders. Come and have fun with us. Also be sure to keep your book logs updated. Prizes for the Build a Better World Program will be given at the end of the program on July 13.

We know that it is fun to get outdoors and play during the summers. It is fun to go on family vacations. But it is also vitally important to keep your mind active and engaged by reading during the summer months as well. Students who keep reading during the summer months will do better when school starts back. So our advice to you is to play a little, rest a little, and read a little each and every day.

Happy Reading.

Please remember that these machines have had all programs that were purchased by the library removed. The funds raised by this auction will go directly back to purchasing new technology for the library in the form of matching funds when the library applies for technology grants.

It is that time of year again. Summer reading is just about to start. We are excited about Build a Better World Summer Reading 2017. Registration is required for K-6th grade participants. Also, we ask that you keep your book log updated. Story Hours will be presented on Thursdays at 2pm beginning June 1 and running through July 13. For our Teens and Adults, we will have our reading contests for the months of June and July. All that must be done is filling out a “How I Liked This Book” form found at the circulation desk. Let’s get ready to read!

It is also the time of year the Gently Used Computer Silent Auction. All gently used computers, desktop and laptop models, are out and up for bid. Bids will be accepted until May 31 at 5pm. Each computer will have a bid sheet with a minimum bid listed on it. All programs that were purchased by the library have been removed. While the library appreciates the money that the silent auction raises (which incidentally goes to purchasing newer computers), bids only have to be increased by a cent or two to be the highest bidder, please bear this in mind when bidding on these gently-used items.

Happy Reading!
