Happy New Year! We are looking forward to great things here at the Elma Ross Public Library in 2018. We have some really great programs scheduled for this year and we hope that you enjoy them as well. We will continue to try a few things here like an Adult Coloring Program that we call Lunch & Leisure on the 4th Wednesday of each month at noon (bring your own lunch) and various special pop-up days like Popcorn Day. We also have our regular programs like Toddler Time and the Basic Skills Computer Class. We are also planning a Family Night event each quarter, so stay tuned for more details. 2018 here we come!

Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet? There is a resolution that I make each year and that is to read more – read something different, maybe get a different perspective, keep myself educated and aware. Reading is one of the most powerful tools that we have in our lives. The skills of successful reading begin at infancy – yes infancy, when our parents read and talk to us. Being read to as an infant helps our reading and learning skills as we grow older. We want our children to have the best things in life which include the ability to read, so start reading early, it helps tremendously.

We are in need of a volunteer Genealogist. If you have a passion for genealogy research and a desire to help others, we have just the place for you here at the library. There are no set hours, just what you are able to give us. Sound interesting? Please contact us about this volunteer opportunity.

Happy Reading!

Time for the annual library rendition of a Christmas song. This year’s ditty is sung to the tune of “Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas.” Enjoy.

Come visit the holly, jolly Library;
It’s the best place in our town.
I don’t know if there’ll be snow
but have a cup of cheer.
Come visit the holly, jolly Library;
And when you walk down through the isles,
Say Hello to friends you know
and everyone you meet.

Oh Ho all the books in rows
right where you can see;
Some Fiction waits for you;
Mystery is for me.
We have a holly jolly Library
and in case you didn’t hear
Oh by golly we have a holly jolly Library this year!

The Elma Ross Public Library will be closed on Saturday, December 23; Monday, December 25; and Tuesday, December 26, in observance of the Christmas holiday. The Library will also be closed on Monday, January 1, 2018 in observance of the New Year.

A letter on behalf of Haywood County Reading Railroad.

We would like to ask for your help in making possible a brighter future for all children of Haywood County. The goal of Haywood County Reading Railroad is to stimulate early childhood reading with the hope that it will foster greater academic achievement when children enter school. Since 2004, Haywood County Reading Railroad has been providing free, monthly, age-appropriate books to all children under the age of five who reside in Haywood County. In this 13-year period, we have delivered over 124,000 books to 4,541 pre-school children. This accomplishment has come with the continuing support of Brownsville Rotary Club, Brownsville Review Clubs, Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation, United Way, and numerous individual community members, such as yourself. Loss of funding from the city and county, due to budget constraints, has had a dramatic impact on all non-profit entities in the county – Haywood County Reading Railroad is one of those entities. Our hope is that, with your help, we can overcome this loss and continue our efforts to provide children with quality books far into the future.

Please consider an amount of your choosing or
$75.00 one monthly books, one child for five years
$60.00 one monthly book, one child for four years
$45.00 one monthly book, one child for three years
$30.00 one monthly books, one child for two years
$15.00 one monthly book, one child for one year

Haywood County Reading Railroad is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization affiliated with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Foundation. All donations are tax deductible.

Please send your donation to Haywood County Reading Railroad, P. O. Box 25, Brownsville, TN 38012 or you may bring it to the Elma Ross Public Library.
