Have you decided what you are going to be for Halloween?  Halloween is just next week.  Can you believe it?  Next week!  We may have a couple of staff members dressing up for the day.  Hmmmmmmm . . . . . that should be interesting.  The day after Halloween is November 1st or All Saint’s Day.  The month of November is just about here.  Here is the calendar of events for the library for November.

Monday, November 5th – Toddler Time at 11am.  All toddlers and their caregivers are invited to hear stories, color/craft, and have a light snack.

Tuesday, November 6th – Election Day.  Please be sure to remember to cast your vote in this year’s election.  Also, since you will be out voting, you will want to drop by for some delicious pancakes, sausage, and a drink (all for $5.00) at Rotary Pancake Day which will be located at First United Methodist Church in Culver Hall from 7am to 7pm.  All proceeds from Pancake Day go to Rotary service projects which include local scholarships, dictionaries for 3rd graders, wheels in motion, and Haywood County Reading Railroad.  Go vote and eat pancakes.

Sunday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day.  Let us all honor all veterans.  Thank you is never enough.

Monday, November 19th – Toddler Time at 11am.  All toddlers and their caregivers are invited to listen to stories, color/craft, and have a light snack.

The Elma Ross Public Library will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 22nd and 23rd, in observance of Thanksgiving.  We hope that everyone has a blessed day.

Lunch & Learn is not offered in the months of November and December because of the holiday season.  Lunch & Learn will begin again in January.  If you know of a person or program that would be good for a Lunch & Learn program, please contact the library at 772-9534.

            What a busy month.

            Happy Reading!

Some things just shouldn’t happen.  People don’t need to be mean, hateful or damaging to others.  People don’t need to be mean, hateful or damaging to other people’s property.  Someone, on Friday evening, either during or after last week’s home football game, decided that the Library Book Return Box, that white metal box at the end of the entrance ramp of the library that has “Library Book Return” written on it, was a trash can, and dropped the remnants of a chocolate shake inside it. Library staff found the next day, to their great horror, the damage that it caused to the books that had been dropped off after library hours.  At lease six books were damaged.  One book is completely ruined and will have to be discarded.  Please be considerate and put trash where it belongs – in a garbage can and not the Library Book Return Box.

It is newspaper article time again.  What to write?  What to write?  What to write?  Hmmmmm . . . . . having a wee bit of difficulty in determining what library programs to write about.  We have quite a bit going this month however, the calendar was presented in last week’s newspaper article.  The information does bear repeating though.  People need to know about the computer classes being offered this month.  (Classes are on Tuesdays from 8:30-9:30am or from 3-4pm.  We have just a few classes left.  We have MedinePlus.gov Class on the 16th and Medicare Part D Class on the 23rd.)  People need to know about Toddler Time. (Toddler Time is offered on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at 11am.  All toddlers and their caregivers are invited to hear stories, color/craft, and have a light snack.)  People also need to know about Lunch & Learn.  (Lunch & Learn will be offered on Wednesday, October 24th at 12 noon.  Our guest speaker is Kris Phifer from the American Heart Association..  Bring a lunch, the library will provide drinks and dessert.)  Or should we focus on some of the other programs that we offer?  Should we tell people about TEL?  (Tennessee Electronic Library is an on-line database filled with scholarly information located right at your fingertips.  All accessed for free.)  Or READS?  (Downloadable e-books available for free.)  Or Genealogy?  (We have family files, microfilm records, and Ancestry and HeritageQuest subscriptions for all your family research needs.)  Or the new circulation program and all the social media links on it?  Wait, we did that a few weeks ago, too.  Gosh darn it.  What shall we tell people about?  Well, this week’s article may not have too much in it.  Maybe we’ll have better luck next week.

October is here!  Leaves are turning colors.  A brisk fall breeze is in the air.  There are pumpkins out now.  And scarecrows too.  How do you want to enjoy the fall?  Fall into a great book of course!

A hearty round of applause and thanks go to Rene Moss, Director for the Brownsville-Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, for speaking at Lunch & Learn last week.  Rene shared some lovely stories with us and we with her as well.  If you have not done so already, please go by the Chamber and introduce yourself to Rene and welcome her to Brownsville and HaywoodCounty.  Thanks for being with us Rene!

Our October calendar is quite full here at the library.  We have Toddler Time the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 11am.  All toddlers and their caregivers are invited for stories, coloring/craft, and a light snack.  Our next Toddler Time program will be offered on Monday, October 15th at 11am.

Free Computer Classes run through this month.  We have Tennessee Electronic Library on October 2nd, Learn-a-Test of October 9th, MedlinePlus.gov on October 16th, and Medicare Part D on October 23rd.  Classes are offered from 8:30-9:30am or from 3-4pm.  A Lab Day is offered each Friday at the same times.

Lunch & Learn will be offered on Wednesday, October 24th at 12 noon.  Our guest speaker will be Kris Phifer from the American Heart Association.  Please remember to bring a lunch, the library will provide drinks and dessert.  This will be the last Lunch & Learn of this year.  We do not offer Lunch & Learn in the months of November and December.  Lunch & Learn will resume in January 2013.

            Happy Reading!
