It is the end of the first month of the brand new year.  How is this new year treating you so far?  We hope that it is treating you very well.  We have been enjoying our new year here at the library.  We wish to extend a big hearty thank you to Mr. Andy Wynn from the Salvation Army who spoke for our Lunch & Learn program last week.  It was very exciting to hear all about what the Salvation Army is doing here in HaywoodCounty.  Thank you Mr. Wynn for being with us!

Now that the month of January will be over and the new month of February will be starting tomorrow, here is the calendar of events for the month.  We hope that everyone enjoys the library as much as we do!  The library has some great things planned for the month, come on by and check us out.

Monday, February 4th and Monday, February 18th – Toddler Time at 11am.  All toddlers and their caregivers are invited to the library to listen to stories, color/craft, and have a light snack.  We love Toddler Time at the Library!

Wednesday, February 27th – Lunch & Learn at the Library.  Each month we have guest speakers come and inform us about the happenings here in HaywoodCounty.  Our guest speaker is yet to be announced, so please stay tuned for details.  Please remember to bring a lunch, the library will provide drinks and dessert.

A note about tax forms – no, we unfortunately do not know when the IRS is going to send us the forms that we ordered last fall.  As soon as they are sent to us, we will put them out.  It is frustrating to the library staff as well.  Thank you for your patience.

The Friends group is actively working on scheduling the Friends Annual Membership Dinner Meeting and will hopefully be making an announcement about the date and time very soon.  Please stay tuned for details.  We are always looking for Friends members.  Please consider becoming a Friend of the Library this year.  Your donations really do make a difference.

We have been getting a great deal of questions about tax forms.  Here is what we know so far.  We ordered our supply of all tax forms back in the fall.  Due to last-minute legislation, the printing of tax forms was delayed.  Due to this delay, we have received only a very small amount of forms that we had ordered.  We do not know when the IRS plans to send us these forms.  We will put the forms out as soon as we receive them.  If you are unsure about which forms that you need, please contact a certified tax preparer or the IRS.  You may access their website by going to the following URL www.IRS.gov   If you go to a site that has anything other than “.gov” at the end of it, it is not the legitimate IRS website.  All government websites end with “.gov”, and not “.com”, “.net”, or “.org”.  The staff members of the library are not able, under any circumstances, to give out any type of tax advice.  Library staff cannot tell you which forms to use or how to fill them out.  The library also cannot give out any type of “red letter” forms.  Any forms that have red-lettering on it, like W2s or 1099s, cannot be gotten from us.  These forms must come from your employer.  If your employer needs these types of forms, they can go to the IRS website and order these forms for themselves.  If your employer has told you that you have to get your W2s online, please make sure that you have the secured website information with you so that it may be accessed at the library.  We cannot guess what the website address is, it is something that your employer must provide to you.  Printing charges do apply when printing tax forms here at the library from the IRS website or from your employer.  Any printing is $0.10 per page from the Black and White printer and $0.20 per page from the Color printer.  Thank you for your understanding and patience.

We have a wonderful new Family Night Program coming up next week.  We are offering a Family Game Night on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 7pm.  What is Family Game Night?  Well, we wanted to offer a Family Night where families could come together here at the library and play board games.  What kind of board games?  Monopoly, Chess, Scrabble, Trouble, Mah Jong, Candy Land, etc.  We just want to play some games, have some fellowship, and some snacks.  Does that sound like fun to you?  We hope that it does.  We are taking reservations for this program, please call the library at 772-9534 to sign up for the first Family Game Night!  Family Game Night on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 7pm!

A word about tax forms.  Yes, we ordered our supply of tax forms back in August.  We are still waiting for the majority of them to arrive.  No, we do not know exactly when they will arrive.  They will arrive when the IRS ships them to us.  We have been asked recently about W2s and 1099s.  These two forms must come from YOUR EMPLOYER.  The library does NOT carry these forms.  The library (any library) is forbidden, by federal law, from giving these two forms out.  Also, the staff of the library is not qualified to give out any type of tax advice.  If you have questions about which forms you need, please contact a certified tax preparer or the IRS.  Thank you for your patience.

The Library will be closed on Monday, January 21, 2013, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  We hope that everyone has a blessed day.

Lunch & Learn will begin again this month on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at 12 noon.  Our guest speaker is TBA, so stay tuned for details.  As always, bring a lunch, the library will provide drinks and dessert.  Let’s Lunch & Learn at the Library!

Happy New Year Everybody! *tweet . . . tweet . . . tweet . . .toss confetti . . .tweet*    What an exciting time – a New Year!  The library had some major milestones in the year 2012.  We had the 100th Anniversary of Library Service in Brownsville/Haywood County.  We also had the 20th Anniversary of the Elma Ross Public Library Building.  We offered a series of free computer classes through out the year.  And in keeping with the “out with the old and in with the new philosophy’, the library implemented a new circulation program that is on-line and can be accessed at any time, even from your home.  The URL link for the Agent Verso Catalog is:  http://tenv-verso.auto-graphics.com/iluminar/home.asp?lid=ross  The library even has a new website.  The URL for the website is: http://elmarosspubliclibrary.webs.com  You may access the on-line catalog from the website, too!

What are some of the other “new” things that we are going to have here at the library?  We will be starting a new courier service (fingers crossed) for Inter-Library Loan program.  This means, that if you need a book that is not currently in our collection, you may request it from another library in Tennessee and the new courier service will allow us to receive these borrowed items a little faster than the current system.

We will be offering free computer classes again this year.  We have some new programs that the staff is learning that we hope to share with our patrons a little later this new year.  These programs are:  PrintMaster 2012 (publishing software), Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing (typing software), Quicken Willmaker (legal software), Scrapbook Boutique (digital scrapbooking software), Calendar Creator (calendar software), and Lineage Family Tree (genealogy software).

We are also offering a new Family Game Night event on Friday, January 18th at 7pm.  We’ll have Monopoly, Scrabble, and a number of other board games to choose from this evening.  Please call the library at 772-9534 to sign up for this new family fun event!

We are looking forward to this new year and we hope that you are too!
