We have an announcement to make. The West Tennessee Career Coach will be at the Elma Ross Public Library on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 10am. (Information from the getonthecoach.tn.gov website) – “The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development is proud to roll out our Career Coaches…mobile centers with services similar to what you might find in a Tennessee Career Center. These vehicles will arrive on the scene to provide a mobile computer lab with Internet access; create a venue for workshops including resume assistance and interviewing skills; and serve as a recruitment center for companies moving into our state. If the Career Coach is in your neighborhood, great things are happening on the job front, so get on board!” Come and visit the West Tennessee Career Coach on Thursday, January 30th at the Elma Ross Public Library.
We have a question we would like to ask you. Do you consider yourself a geek? You must think of the word “geek” not in the traditional meaning of the word, mind you, but in the sense of “having a passion for something.” Do you consider yourself a geek? The answer is YES! We are all passionate about something. It may be books, movies, sewing, skydiving, snorkeling, stamps, coins, racecars – it can be whatever that makes you most happy. We here at the Elma Ross Public Library are “geek”-ing ourselves up this year. We want to find out what makes you happy and then we’ll see how the library can help you to achieve your happiness. In celebration of the Geek the Library campaign here at the library, we will be having a Popcorn Party on Friday, January 31, 2014 from 10 – 5pm. We will be giving away popcorn to everyone who comes into the library that day and we will also ask you to sign our “Geek Board” telling us what you are passionate about. All libraries are vital to their communities and we want to make people more aware of what our library has to offer all of the citizens of Brownsville/Haywood County so help us by celebrating with us as we “Geek the Library” on Friday, January 31st with a Popcorn Party.
Happy Reading and don’t forget to “pop” into the library on Popcorn Party Day!

Since this article didn’t run in the Graphic last week, we resubmitted it for this week.
It’s a brand New Year! We here at the Elma Ross Public Library are very excited about this New Year. A New Year means new plans, new adventures, and new books to read! Come and join us as we celebrate this New Year to the fullest. We want to celebrate with you. We want to find out what you are passionate about, what you love, what inspires you, what makes you tick. Why do we want to know this? We want to know this because we want you to utilize the library in making what you love possible. How do we do that?
That’s a really great question. How will we do that? How will we find out what you love? We will start by listening. We want to hear from you as you tell us what you love. Once we know what you love, the library will be able to take steps in helping you to achieve your passions. This is the main force behind out new “Geek the Library” campaign. Help us to help you find you passions – what you “geek.” You may notice a new banner in the lobby when you enter the library. It is of a young boy, dressed in a suit and he Geeks worms. Check it out when you come to the library, it’s really neat. Then you can tell us what you “geek.” We will be setting up a Geek Board, as soon as our ordered supplies come in, and you may begin telling us what you “geek’ on our board. We are excited! We hope that you will be too!
The tentative calendar of events for the library for January is as follows:
Lunch & Learn at the Library will be returning on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 12 noon in the Meeting Room. Our guest speaker is yet to be announced, so please stay tuned for details. Please remember to bring a lunch, the library will provide drinks and dessert.
The Elma Ross Public Library will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2014 in Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We hope that everyone has a blessed day.
Friday, January 31st will be our first Geek Day at the Library. We will be giving away a small treat to patrons as they visit us this day. Oh what fun!
Happy Reading!
