Is it really almost the end of the month of September? That is what the calendar says. What does that mean? Well, it means that the Geek the Library Campaign is almost over.

Our local library has been running a Geek the Library campaign since January 1st of this year. We have been telling everyone about how our library functions, what our collections and services are, and how we need to make the library a priority in our community. We have wanted to know what you “Geek”, what you are passionate about. We want people to know how this public library can help you achieve your passions and your goals. We certainly hope that we have gotten the message across to everyone who comes in our doors. How can you forget seeing the giant banner of the young boy who geeks worms??? Or the bulletin board asking “What do You Geek? And we mustn’t forget the Geek Boards that have been signed and are on display. We Geek our Elma Ross Public Library!!

For our Geek Finale, we will be having a Popcorn Day here at the library on Friday, September 26th from 10am until 5pm. We want everyone to pop into the library to check us out, browse the collections, check out a book or two, surf the ‘net on one of our computers, read a magazine or newspaper, or use the Wifi and have a bag of freshly popped popcorn to munch. So pop on down to the library on Friday, September 26th and have some popcorn and visit with us a while and let us know what you “Geek”.

Fall is such a wonderful time of the year. Cooler weather. Leaves turning color. Fall is a great time to come to the library and check out our collections. We love fall reading!

Well, the new-improved Verso4 on-line catalog is up and running and yes it can be accessed on your smart phone and/or tablet. We are getting accustomed to its features and layout. We hope that you like the site as well. If you have any questions about it, please ask us or leave a comment in the comments section.

We use social media as well. Do you know about it? The Elma Ross Public Library is on Facebook. Really, we are. Search for Elma Ross Public Library and “Like” our page. The Friends of the Elma Ross Public Library has a Facebook page as well. The Friends would appreciate a “Like” too. And not to be outdone, the Haywood County Reading Railroad has a Facebook page also. Please “Like” all these pages. We place current news and interesting tidbits on the Facebook feeds.

Another social media we utilize is the library blog on WordPress. Just search for Elma Ross Public Library or click on the link on the Verso4 homepage to see the latest blogpost. We use the wordpress blog to compliment the newspaper article found in the Brownsville States-Graphic.
Lastly, the Elma Ross Public Library has a website. Its URL is: http://elmarosspubliclibrary.wordpress.com There is a wealth of information on the website. It has our hours of operation, our contact information, history of the library, information about our services, fees, fines, library cards, meeting room use and computer use. Oooh! Aaah! So pretty. What style. And elegance. Such nice colors too. What are we talking about? Haven’t you seen the new look of the Elma Ross Public Library on-line catalog? We’ve gotten an upgrade and a whole new look. We hope that you like it. We are getting used to the new layout and features. Please be patient with us as we reorient ourselves to the program.

One really fantastic new portion of the upgraded on-line catalog is the ability to access the catalog on a tablet and/or smartphone and not just on the computer or laptop. You can now access the on-line catalog on most any mobile device. Isn’t that great? Find out about a book report due in a few days and wonder if we have the book? Check the catalog on your phone.

The upgraded on-line catalog has a couple of new features that we want to point out. Of course, there is the ability to look items up in our collections and see if they are available for checkout. We have a topic search option with pre-assigned searches, just click on one of the topics and see what we have in those collections. We have a calendar showing the upcoming calendar of events for the library. We have a link to the Elma Ross Public Library website. And lastly, we have a comments section, where you can leave us a comment or question.

It really is a great site and we’re proud of it. On the home page you will see the search box; the library hours of operation and our contact information; as well as links to Tennessee Electronic Library; Regional E-book and Audio-book Download System; the facebook pages for the library, the Friends, and Haywood County Reading Railroad; the websites for Haywood County Reading Railroad, Brownsville/Haywood County, and Haywood County Schools and the library blog – all at your fingertips. All accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Hmmm. Looking at the calendar. That just doesn’t look right. That can’t be right. How did it ever become the month of September already? January was just here yesterday, wasn’t it? It doesn’t seem like September yet. It still feels like summer for crying out loud! Wait . . .did I just see a leaf fall from a tree? Oh no, here comes fall again.

Well, pone mustn’t fight with Mother Nature. She always wins anyway. If she says that it’s the beginning of fall, I’ll agree. School has been back in session for a few weeks now. Everyone should be getting into the new school year rhythm. The same can be said here at the library.

Fall at the library is a beautiful thing. It really is. We are always ready to fall into a good book. And we can help you find just the right book for you. We have all genres here. We have Romance, Mystery, Science Fiction, Western, and Christian Fiction, just to name a few. We also have a good selection of non-fiction titles available too. Do you know of an author or title that we don’t currently have on our shelves? If so, please let us know. We are always on the lookout for great new books to add to our collections.

Since school is almost in full swing, we wanted to again remind everyone (parents, students, teachers) of the benefits of the Tennessee Electronic Library for all your studying needs and the Regional E-book and Audiobook Download System for your e-reader needs. They are just at your fingertips. Both are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is also an excellent “Help” section for any technical questions that you may have.

Our Geek the Library Campaign is winding down this month. We started this campaign in January so that we could make the people of Brownsville/Haywood County more aware of our library. How did we do? Did you notice the newspaper articles mentioning Geek the Library? How about the Facebook posts? Did you notice the staff wearing our Geek the Library shirts every Friday? We hope that you did. We will have a final Popcorn Day on Friday, September 26th. Let’s really Geek the Library this month.
