Already the month of November? How can that be? This year has gone by so quickly, hasn’t it? Well if it is the month of November then the month of December is just around the corner. And guess what happens in December? Any clues? How about a hint? Does the word gingerbread spark any memories? Yes, that’s right the Annual Gingerbread House Family Night will be offered on the first Friday in December. We will begin taking reservations soon for this great family fun event very soon.

Speaking about gingerbread, the library had a large square gingerbread pillow that we have used for Gingerbread House Family Night for the last several years. However, we can’t seem to locate this pillow right now, it is nowhere in the library. We know that we used it at last year’s Gingerbread House Family event because we have pictures of the decorations and it was there, and we are wondering if it may have been “gently borrowed” from us? If it has, would whomever borrowed it, please return it, no questions asked? Thanks.

Happy Reading.

The library needs your help. We have a few questions for you and we’d love to hear your answers. The library would like to offer additional computer classes free to the public. What would you be interested in learning? How to write a resume? How to fill out an on-line job application? How to use Microsoft Word or Excel? What days/time would you be able to attend? Early mornings? Afternoons? Evenings? Please let us know. We enjoy being able to offer free classes to the community and we want you to attend.

The library had asked several weeks ago for some items to be donated. We know that everyone is extremely busy, so we thought that we’d ask again. We are interested in obtaining some wooden children’s puzzles, magnetic poetry pieces (banagrams), and Legos. The library would like to try our hand at some passive programs here at the library and these items would be beneficial. So, if you have any gently used Legos, wooden puzzles, etc, the library could use them. Thank you in advance.

Here at the Elma Ross Public Library we are usually “go with the flow” type of people. We do our best to be kind, courteous, friendly, and accommodating to everyone who comes through our doors. It takes a good bit to get us angry. We are angry now. The white, metal box with the words “Library Book Return” is NOT A TRASH CAN! The Library Book Return box even has laminated signs on it stating “NO TRASH” as well as “All Audiovisual Materials Need to be Returned Inside” on it. PLEASE DO NOT PUT TRASH IN THE “LIBRARY BOOK RETURN” BOX! Some person recently placed shards of broken glass into the Library Book Return box. This was completely uncalled for even if you were cleaning up broken glass from the parking lot. And quite dangerous. If library staff had not been looking down when emptying the box of books they would have cut their hands. And as there were several children’s books as well as other books, library mail, newspapers and periodicals in the box, library staff had to carefully examine each item to get any glass out from the pages before checking the materials in and shelving them. Please use some COMMON SENSE and put trash where it belongs – in a TRASH CAN and NOT THE “LIBRARY BOOK RETURN” BOX! If you need a trash can at the library, there are several. One is located in the front lobby near the Men’s Restroom. One is located in the main section of the library near the Adult Large Print Collection. One is located at the Circulation Desk. One is located in the Genealogy Room. And there is one located outside at the rear of the building where the staff entrance is located. There are also dumpsters just a few yards away from there as well. Half-eaten food, chip bags, candy wrappers and soda bottles are bad enough and can damage books. Broken glass can cut and should NEVER be placed in a “Library Book Return” receptacle. Never.

Have you heard of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library? Good. Have you heard of Haywood County Reading Railroad, the locally named chapter of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library? We certainly hope the answer is “Yes!” If not, we want to tell you about it.

Haywood County Reading Railroad was formed in 2004 through the dedication and drive of many wonderful individuals. The objective of this program is to provide every child from birth to age 5, who resides in Haywood County, to receive a free book once per month in the mail. A FREE book per month. There is NO CHARGE to be enrolled in this program. All that is required is an enrollment form to be filled out. Enrollment forms are found at the Elma Ross Public Library, the Health Department, DCS, several Physician’s offices, and Haywood County Schools. If enrolled at birth, your child will have received 60 books by their fifth birthday – their very own library! Books which can be read and read again. If you happen to change addresses while your child is enrolled in the Haywood County Reading Railroad program, then PLEASE update your address with us so that there will be no interruption in receiving books. Let us repeat – there is NO CHARGE to enroll/participate in this program. The Haywood County Reading Railroad program is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Many citizens and businesses of Brownsville/Haywood County have and continue to support Haywood County Reading Railroad. Will you consider making a donation? Donations are gladly accepted at any time. Do you know of any family with children under the age of five who have not been enrolled? Please tell them about Haywood County Reading Railroad and help them sign-up – it’s free.
